Anatomy of a "Loco Moco"
So, what is a loco moco you ask? Not to be confused with the great Charlottesville institution, Mono Loco, a loco moco consists of a grilled hamburger patty on a bed of sticky rice, topped with a fried egg and brown gravy. While our Spanish-speaking friends here will be snickering at the Spanish translation, do not be fooled--it has endured as one of Hawaii's quintessential comfort foods since the 1940's. It is working man's (and woman's) food that sticks to your bones, and some say even cures a hangover. The loco moco is yet another example of why Hawaii is a cultural melting pot in the middle of the Pacific.
